Botox Treatment

Botulinum toxin, commonly known as Botox is a cosmetic procedure designed to treat facial wrinkles, specifically, the Crow’s Feet facial wrinkle. Botulinum toxin can treat this excessive muscle contraction because it tends to paralyze muscle in a localized fashion. Since it can be injected in a specific spot, it is particularly effective in treating wrinkled areas of the face. Certain groups of muscles are important in displaying the wrinkles developed by facial expressions of emotions and certain facial muscle are formed to keep the facial lines from leaving the face since the muscle become hyperfunctional. Thus, Botox was found to be useful in removing the resultant hyperfunctional facial lines.

How Does Botox Work?

Normally, your brain sends electrical messages to your muscles so that they can contract and move. The electrical message is transmitted to the muscle by a substance called acetylcholine. BOTOX® works to block the release of acetylcholine and, as a result, the muscle does not receive the message to contract. This means that the muscle spasms or movements that cause wrinkling, stop, or are greatly reduced after using BOTOX®. Patients sometimes refer to the effects of the injection to their area of treatment as being “paralyzed” temporarily.

On the day of the procedure itself, it won’t be much different as it will only be like a trip to the doctor. It will be a series of shots or sessions, but it will be just like having a normal shot. Some botox side effects may show up once the procedure is done, nothing to worry about though.
Right after your procedure, you can be up and doing your usual routine. You may experience redness, but you’ll feel ok. Another thing is that the doctors recommend that the patients don’t lie down for at least 4 hours after the procedure, this will ensure that the substance will not migrate to other unintended parts of your face.
You may begin to notice results within 24 to 48 hours, with results lasting up to four months for moderate to severe frown lines. Remember that results vary from patient to patient though, so your physician will plan your next appointment based on your results and aesthetic goals.
